ORIGENES:
La banda comienza su carrera musical en el instituto Fairfax de Los Angeles, en 1983, cuando Michael Blazary (más conocido como "Flea", Hillel Slovak y Jack Irons formaron una banda llamada "Anthym". Pronto se les unió Anthony Kiedis, otro amigo del instituto. La escena punk de aquel entonces dominaba Los Angeles, con bandas como The Go-Go's, The Germs y Circle Jerks. Los chicos sopesaron varios nombres entre los que figuaran "Faces" "Anthym" "What is this" "Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem", pero se quedaron finalmente con el que les lanzaría a la fama mundial, Red Hot Chili Peppers, cuya historia se remonta a un chiste sobre "Chili Willi and the Red Hot Peppers", una banda country de los años 70. La primera canción que crearon fue "Out in L.A.", compuesta por Kiedis (Anthony paso toda la noche componiéndola porque quería sorprender al resto del grupo). La formación original era Kiedis en voz, Flea en bajo, Slovak en guitarra e Irons en batería (actualmente milita en Pearl Jam). Tras varias semanas componiendo y tocando temas, la banda se encuentra con un puñado suficiente como para grabar una demo en un cassette, sin embargo no tenían un sitio donde la acústica fuera aceptable y no se disparase de precio para los bolsillos de unos jóvenes estudiantes. Flea, que también tocaba en una banda llamada "Fear" como batería, conocía un lugar donde podían grabar a un precio barato. Cuando grabaron la demo incluyeron temas como "Out in L.A.” , “Green heaven” y “You always sing the same". Así paso el tiempo, mientras la banda le hacia escuchar la demo a cualquiera que quisiera escucharla. Sin éxito un buen día se les ocurrió salir a tocar en vivo desnudos en una presentacion en el Kit Kat Club y con una media en los genitales. Tras ese concierto todos en Los Angeles hablaban de ellos y EMI los contrata.
RHCP pronto llamarían la atención del público angelino con su original y curiosa mezcla de punk y de funk clásico y su comportamiento en los conciertos. Hillel Slovak y Jack Irons se fueron de la banda, siendo reemplazados respectivamente por Jack Sherman y Cliff Martinez (quien luego sería el compositor de la música para la película independiente "Sex, Lies and Videotape", entre otras). No sería muy duradera la estancia de estos dos miembros en RHCP.
La banda contrató a Andy Gill (Dr. Funkestein), integrante de Gang of Four, para producir su primer album, autotitulado Red Hot Chili Peppers en 1984. Sin embargo la colaboracion seria un desastre donde Gill trataba de llevar a la banda a un sonido más pop en vez de su fusión punk-metal-funk. Para el siguiente disco pidieron a George Clinton de "Parliament Funkadelic" que produjera el siguiente álbum, Freaky Styley, ya bastante más fiel a lo que sería el sonido Red Hot Chili Peppers. La banda, para promocionar el álbum, saco dos videos: Jungle Man y Catholic School Girls Rule, e hizo una pequeña gira por Estados Unidos. Para este disco volvieron hillel slovak y jack irons (en el tour de promoción del disco)
